La familia sumergida
Argentina
Maria Alche
Marcela’s peaceful family life is disturbed when Rina, her sister and lifetime companion, suddenly dies.
Facing her own mortality, she enters a crisis and gets deeply self- absorbed. Meanwhile, she deals with household chores like getting the washing machine fixed and helping her 14-year-old son to prepare for some tests while her husband is away on a work trip.
The subsequent unsteady days and a series of odd events bring back Pichi, a distant relative who keeps calling her. Pichi suggests a reunion with a part of the family Marcela has been aloof with, thus unsettling her even more.
Her home also receives a friend of her daughter’s, Nacho. He’s lost in the city after his work trip abroad was canceled. Marcela gives him some books and he offers to help out in return.
As they find old photos and objects while clearing out her sister’s home, a bond of complicity grows between them.
Back home, the relatives in the pictures turn up and talk with her, a conversation overlapping with fragments of the wake and the remote past. Marcela and the apparitions discuss old family matters still upsetting her.
The bond between Nacho and Marcela is nurtured by household chores and walks. She asks him to come along to see a lot, abandoned by her family long ago.
Off they go, as mutual desire arises.
After a night together, she will have to return to her world and, as her husband comes home, she will have to find the way to carry on with life.
