Boreal
Paraguay
Federico Adorno
Three labourers are working on a fence in the Paraguayan Chaco. Alone, in that rough and aggressive land, they must dig the ground, place posts and tighten wires. In that region of nearby horizons, all they can do is looking at the sky, wiping their sweat and to continue working. Francisco and Aníbal are over their 50´s and Luis is about 20 years old. Soon Luis shows signs of weariness. A solitary walk in the Chaco forest awakens his instincts and becomes somebody different that has the urge to leave. Francisco tries to convince him to endure.
Mennonite Boss unexpectedly arrives at work site. Luis takes courage and manages to convince the Mennonite Boss to let him leave. Francisco and Aníbal remain to continue the work of the fence in an environment that begins to become strangely eerie as days go by. The Boss had to return but has not. Days pass and for these men waiting becomes difficult. Stranded in their small campsite and unable to do anything, they just watch how food and water run out. Fed up, Aníbal decides to leave the place; Francisco resists stubbornly but soon his false hope collapses.
They set off aimlessly, trying to find any sign on the road that leads them to the impossible task of reaching Montiel ranch, where they hope to find help and sustenance. They roam for several hours, following endless narrow, forking paths. Hours pass quickly and in that continuous procession, they have returned to the same place from which they had left. Back on their feet, these men just wander, lost on mazy road paths but they do not lose the hope of finding a sign that shows the way to their homes.
