Tham and Qui are a nice couple, two young country people who move to the city, hoping, like many others, to find a better life there. They are very much in love, but Tham is very maternal, while Qui is rather negligent and a bit rough, too. Qui works as a laborer and rides his bike to the labor market every day to find a new task for the day. Meanwhile, Tham works as a cookmaid and a houskeeper in a wealthy family from Hanoi. This way, she comes in touch with the prosperity and starts to dream about it. Soon she attracts the attention of a hobby poet called Le Thuat.
When the tension between Tham and Qui grows because of his negligence, Tham feels attracted to Le Thuat because of his charm and the hope for a better life. She soon gives in and leaves Qui. Desperate he tries to find her, giving up his old life and abandoning the place they lived. He makes a new friend who proposes to work as a rickshaw driver, a good way to make some money and find his old girlfriend...
